Défi international

Défi international supports international education at the University of Bordeaux and develops the quality of our international programmes. It reflects our strong institutional commitment to internationalisation.

Teaching your discipline in a foreign language is a challenge. English as a lingua franca is widely used in international education and research – a shared disciplinary language. International programmes target a range of learners who for the majority speak English as a second language. For this reason, Défi international not only focusses on developing language skills but also on developing the teaching skills needed for multicultural and multilingual learning environments. Our international classroom approach is thus also relevant to international programmes taught through French

The Défi international project:

  • heightens awareness of teaching and learning in internationalised contexts,
  • provides tailored support for teaching teams for for internationalisation of the curriculum, and international classrooms, at both undergraduate and post graduate level.
  • offers a variety of training formats in English to prepare teachers for teaching in the international classroom.
  • supports teachers who want to experiment with the set-up ofteaching their courses in English or develop co-teaching programmes with English and content teachers.
  • nurtures a community of Bordeaux teachers and lecturers in Bordeaux who are involved in internationalising talent hotbed for the internationalization of academic programsacademic programmes,
  • helps to build teachers' confidence in their capacity to mobilisze their teaching and linguistic language skills in this new context,
  • fosters intercultural development and inclusiveness in the international classroom,
  • promotes the development of high -quality international courses,
  • allows draws from the experiences of teachers feedback to improve the quality of new teaching and learning in this new teaching context.

Setting up international academic programs, courses or teaching units

Défi international offers made-to-measure workshops with teaching teams who wish to internationalise a course. These sessions are aimed at analysing the needs of the programme and disciplinary context.

What type of course? Learner profile? Pedagogical approach? Resources? Educational technology? Language training?

Assessment? From this needs analysis we can together design an action plan and an international programme.

Shadowing

The International Challenge enables teachers to be shadowed by an English teacher, thus enabling a teacher in a discipline to work with an English teacher for 10 hours of tutorials within an inter-disciplinary teaching unit.

The goal is to enable teachers to define the language needs in the training context, exchange good practices, and provide better support for teachers and students when they communicate in English in the classroom. In concrete terms, it involves creating a sequence of courses, part of an exercise, work on a project or other assignment in English.

159 teachers supported through the program 90 teachers trained via the intensive course

8 conversation workshops offered on 8 sites every week 4 three-day courses offered in each academic year

In addition to the focus on teaching in English, the intensive course introduces different teaching methods. Some of them are already in use (work in small groups, ongoing theme-based work, etc.), while others are more innovative, like the flipped classroom. To teach in English, non-native teachers are obliged to use such methods in order to avoid exhaustion or losing students. For French teachers used to conventional classroom teaching methods, these new practices are easier to implement in small groups. Teaching in English requires a change in teacher practices as well as in student practices.
